RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
