Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
