Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific decisions from the official, following the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
